Coach,
The summer has ended, and now our fall sports practices are upon us. The new year brings excitement and optimism for an outstanding 2021-22 season. I hope that you are energized and ready to give your student athletes the quality coaching that is found in our Montana coaches.
I would like to thank those coaches who attended the 54th annual Montana Coaches Association clinic this summer. We had 648 coaches who attended this event and as a member of the MCA board, we were pleased with the turnout after cancelling last year. I always viewed the clinic as a rewarding end to the summer. The opportunity to learn from other coaches and the fellowship that is shared during the week always provided me with the final boost before jumping into the fall season. If you were not able to attend this year, please consider next year. If you have any suggestions for the clinic, I encourage you to contact your class representative as we continually look to improve this opportunity for professional development along with the social events.
Montana had some exciting news from the National High School Athletic Coaches Association as our state earned 3 prestigious awards. Two National Coaches of the Year – Paul Barta – Basketball and Larry Smith – Softball along with Mark Yoakam being inducted into the NHSACA Hall of Fame. If you get a chance to congratulate them, please do so as this is an incredible accomplishment.
I hope that all your practices go well, and your athletes stay healthy. Enjoy your time teaching the life skills that your students will carry with them throughout their lives and the memories that will be made during your season. I know that it is difficult but remember to find time for yourself and your family, keeping a healthy balance between work and your personal health.
I truly look forward to watching games this year after dealing with fan restrictions last year. We know the importance of athletics to our students, school and communities so a great big thank you goes out to all Montana coaches as they embark onto this year’s adventures. Good luck and best wishes.
Dennis Murphy
